Selena
She was a musician, singer-performer, and designer who broke obstacles in the field. She was the first Mexican American singer that was modern and traditional. She brought both cultures together and helped bring Tejano music into mainstream culture. Her tragic death cut a hole in her growing popularity and, like many times the moment a brilliant, warm star dies far too young left many to mourn all the untapped potential. As a result fans are enthused over the years to dig in to work even more to make sure her accomplishments won't be lost in the dust. The tragic death of Selena by a gunman triggered the outpouring of emotions within Latino communities that is comparable to those who reacted to the death of Elvis Presley and John Lennon's. A hugely popular performer throughout Latino communities across North America her music crossed borders of culture to impact the lives of young and old alike. Selena might have been described by certain people as the Latina Madonna, but she's still a fantastic role model. Selena's family values off stage as well as her involvement in AIDS awareness campaigns provide a great example.
